£10,000 needed & here's why.......
This is gorgeous Freddy, he came to Rottie Rehab in May 2016 because his owner reluctantly had to make the decision as she has a terminal condition & is in a wheelchair. When he arrived at Rottie Rehab we noticed his back legs didn't move independently & his back was hunched. Freddy was immediately taken to our vets who xrayed him. When I saw the xrays for myself I cried, how this poor boy is still walking is beyond me. Neither of the femoral heads sit in their sockets & the sockets are so shallow they wouldn't hold them anyway. My vet said he was in serious trouble as was in alot of discomfort & pain at times too. A wonderful Orthopeadic Specialist in Bristol was consulted & has confirmed that Freddy would need a double hip transplant as well as reshaping the sockets to hold the femoral heads in place. As Freddy's back end has absolutely no muscle due to not using it, the surgeon will not operate until Freddy has had 3 months of physiotherapy & hydrotherapy to build muscle up to support the hips post op.
Now I know this is going to be a controversial decision & I had a long discussion with our amazing vet about what people would say about spending this much money on one dog when we could just put him to sleep & rescue so many more. She is the first one to question me if I'm making the right decision for a dog when it comes to surgery etc, however she just looked at me & said:-
'If anyone questions why you are doing this just tell them to come & meet him & they will know. If anyone deserves this, Freddy does'.
If he was an older dog with behavioural issues I may have to reconsider the options but I challenge anyone to come & meet Freddy & tell me I'm doing the wrong thing! This boy has coped with this birth defect for 14 months yet is one of the happiest dogs I have ever had the fortune to meet, he has adapted his movement & posture to cope with the discomfort & pain. He still wants to run & play with the other Rotties & by god he deserves to one of these days. I have given him my word that I will make it happen if it kills me. I owe him that just for the amount of unconditional love he gives every single day & NEVER complains.
I have always believed that whatever Rottie we agree to take on, it is my duty to this exceptional breed that I do everything in my power to give that dog everything I can so that he/she has the best quality of life possible for the rest of their life, whatever that takes & no stone will be left unturned & every avenue will be exhausted.
So far we have calculated the following costs for Freddy:-
Initial xrays £ 437
Hydrotherapy for 12 weeks (based on 3 times per week) prior to surgery £ 1,209
Physiotherapy for 12 weeks (based on 3 times per week) prior to surgery £ 1,440
2 x hip replacements @ £3,000 per hip £ 6,000
Hydrotherapy for 12 weeks (based on 2 times per week) post op £ 807
Physiotherapy for 12 weeks (based on 2 times per week) post op £ 960
None of this includes any of the fuel etc it will cost to drive Freddy the hour & a half each way to his Physio & Hydro sessions each week, we are literally asking anyone with a heart to donate purely for Freddys treatment & rehabilitation.
